We aim to ensure that through the study of mathematics at Brook Mead our pupils understand both its power and its beauty. First and foremost this means our pupils are numerically fluent and fully comfortable in the world of numbers but also that they can generalise and reason using both precise mathematical vocabulary and abstract symbols. It ensures that they can analyse and evaluate data presented in a variety of forms and draw conclusions from it and that they are able to solve increasingly difficult mathematical problems and communicate their solutions clearly using their deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We ensure they are practiced in using these skills in many and varied contexts and thus will be able to transfer and apply the skills to everyday life as well as to other academic subjects and further study. Through the use of examples from science, technology, engineering and finance amongst others, pupils will learn that mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries and provides the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems.
